How premium payment actually works

Not every payment on a policy runs through the same channel.

Paying a premium in full, or making a deposit payment to bind or renew coverage, is something Gleason Insurance Brokers can arrange directly. Monthly installment payments on a financed policy are different — those are usually billed and collected either directly by the carrier itself or by a separate premium finance company that fronted the premium, not by the brokerage.

Knowing which category a specific payment falls into avoids sending a payment to the wrong place, or missing an installment because it was expected to arrive from here instead of the carrier or finance company actually billing for it. If it's unclear which applies to a specific policy, a quick call clarifies it before a payment is due.

Payment options for your policy

Payment methods vary by insurance carrier, policy, transaction type, premium amount, applicable taxes and fees, minimum earned premium requirements, and applicable underwriting or binding requirements — including surplus-lines placements, which often carry their own separate payment and tax-collection process.

Follow the specific payment instructions Gleason Insurance Brokers provides for your transaction rather than assuming one method applies to every policy.

When electronic payment is available, Gleason Insurance Brokers provides a secure payment link through Stripe or another similar approved payment processor — or, for some carriers, a direct payment link with the carrier itself — use only a payment link or instruction that our agency has provided or confirmed directly. Certain premiums, deposits, surplus-lines transactions, or other payments may instead require ACH, wire transfer, premium financing, or direct payment to the insurance carrier or wholesale broker. Availability of an online payment option does not mean electronic payment is available or appropriate for every insurance transaction.

Secure electronic payment link (when available) — Stripe or another similar processor, or a direct link with the carrier
ACH or wire transfer — often required when verified funds are needed before binding
Direct payment to the insurance carrier or wholesale broker — required for certain transactions
Premium financing — a separate agreement with a third-party finance company
One payment method being available doesn't mean it applies to every transaction

Wire transfers, direct carrier payments, and premium financing

ACH or wire transfer may be required for certain transactions, particularly when funds must be received before binding coverage — whether required by an insurance carrier, wholesale broker, managing general agent, or premium finance company, or by Gleason Insurance Brokers' own funds-verification standards.

A wire transfer may be required above a certain minimum premium amount, or based on the specific risk profile of the account — sometimes because the carrier requires it, and sometimes because Gleason Insurance Brokers requires it before submitting funds on your behalf. A wire transfer is typically one of the fastest ways to deliver verified funds when a policy needs to bind quickly. When premium or other required funds are being collected through our agency, all required funds must be received — and, when applicable, cleared or otherwise confirmed as available — before we submit final payment documentation or other required paperwork for processing, unless different arrangements have been specifically authorized.

Some insurance carriers require or permit premium to be paid directly through the carrier's own payment portal, billing department, or installment plan. When direct carrier payment applies, we'll provide or direct you to the correct instructions. Payments made directly to an insurance carrier remain subject to that carrier's own billing, payment, cancellation, reinstatement, and refund terms — not ours.

Qualified transactions may be eligible for third-party premium financing — a separate financial agreement between you and the premium finance company that can include a required down payment, finance charges, interest, fees, a payment schedule, and its own cancellation provisions. Any premium finance agreement and its disclosures should be reviewed carefully before you accept it.

Wire transfer — often the fastest way to deliver verified funds before binding
A carrier's minimum premium threshold, the account's risk profile, or Gleason Insurance Brokers' own funds-verification standard can determine whether a wire transfer is required before binding
Direct carrier payment — subject to that carrier's own billing and cancellation terms
Premium financing — a separate agreement with its own charges, schedule, and cancellation terms
Confirm which method actually applies to your specific transaction before sending funds

Payment requirements prior to binding

Although some insurance policies may technically permit binding before premium funds are remitted to the insurance carrier, wholesale broker, or other receiving party, Gleason Insurance Brokers may still require payment to be received, settled, cleared, or otherwise verified before coverage is bound.

This is intended to ensure the required premium, taxes, fees, minimum earned premium, and other amounts tied to the transaction are actually available before Gleason Insurance Brokers assumes responsibility for submitting or remitting those funds on your behalf.

Payments made by check, ACH, credit card, debit card, or other electronic methods remain subject to settlement, holds, returns, reversals, or chargebacks. When that risk applies to a specific transaction, Gleason Insurance Brokers may require funds to fully settle, or may require an alternative approved payment method, before binding proceeds.

A carrier permitting binding before it receives funds does not mean Gleason Insurance Brokers will bind before funds are received and verified
Minimum earned premium and applicable taxes and fees are part of what has to be available before binding, not just factors at cancellation
Check, ACH, and card payments can be held, returned, reversed, or charged back — that risk can require full settlement before binding
Ask which payment method actually satisfies a specific transaction's binding requirement before assuming yours does

Payment does not bind coverage

Submitting or transmitting payment does not, by itself, bind, issue, renew, reinstate, extend, or modify insurance coverage.

Coverage is effective only when binding requirements have been satisfied and confirmed by an insurance carrier or another party with binding authority, or when Gleason Insurance Brokers has provided written confirmation that coverage has been bound. Don't assume coverage is in effect solely because a payment has been submitted, processed, charged, debited, received, or deposited.

Payment processing times vary by payment method, financial institution, carrier, and transaction — card, ACH, electronic payment, and check payments can all require processing or verification time before funds are actually available. When cleared or verified funds are a condition of binding, coverage is not considered bound solely because a payment transaction has been initiated. For a time-sensitive transaction that requires funds in place before binding, our agency may require a verified wire transfer or another approved method capable of satisfying that requirement.

Gleason Insurance Brokers is not responsible for delays in payment processing, carrier policy issuance, or endorsement turnaround times — including, but not limited to, the amount of time it takes to process a payment prior to binding. These timelines depend on the payment method, the receiving financial institution, the specific carrier, and other factors outside our control.

Payment alone never binds, renews, reinstates, extends, or modifies coverage
Coverage is effective only once confirmed in writing by Gleason Insurance Brokers and/or the carrier
A processing or pending payment is not the same as a cleared, verified payment
Ask which payment method actually satisfies a binding deadline before assuming yours does

Refunds, cancellations, and returned premium

Any return premium or refund is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable insurance policy, insurance carrier, wholesale broker, premium finance agreement, broker fee agreement, and applicable law.

Cancellation of a policy does not necessarily result in a full refund — earned premium, minimum earned premium, audit premium, policy fees, taxes, assessments, financing charges, broker fees where permitted and properly disclosed, and other applicable charges may all affect the amount ultimately returned. Refunds are processed or transmitted in accordance with the applicable policy, contractual requirements, and law.

Commercial auto and trucking policies that carry a state or federal motor carrier filing are subject to an additional consideration: the filing itself typically cannot be canceled immediately. The regulating authority generally requires advance notice — often a minimum of 30 days from the date they are notified — before the filing can be removed, and the named insured remains responsible for premium during that notice period, even if every vehicle on the policy, including the last or only vehicle carried on the filing, has already been sold or removed from operation.

Cancellation does not guarantee a full refund of premium paid
Minimum earned premium, audit premium, fees, and taxes can all reduce what's returned
Refund timing and amount follow the applicable policy, carrier, and any premium finance agreement
Commercial auto/trucking policies with a state or federal filing typically require the regulating authority to receive at least 30 days' notice before the filing is removed — premium remains due during that notice period even if the last vehicle on the filing has been sold

Protecting yourself from wire and payment fraud

Always verify wire instructions before transferring funds.

Email accounts and other electronic communications can be compromised. Before initiating a wire transfer, independently verify the receiving bank, account information, payment amount, and instructions with Gleason Insurance Brokers or the appropriate receiving party using a known, previously verified telephone number — not one provided in the same email as the instructions. Don't rely solely on an email advising you that previously provided wire instructions have changed.

For security, never send banking information or credit card numbers by email, even to a contact you know — use only a secure payment link or method our office has provided or confirmed directly. Gleason Insurance Brokers will never ask you to disregard previously verified payment instructions or send funds to a different account without that kind of independent verification.

Frequently asked questions

8 questions — start typing to filter

Can I pay my insurance premium online?

Yes — submit a request using the form on this page and a broker will send you a secure payment link, or wire/ACH or direct carrier instructions, whichever fits your transaction. Every request is reviewed and verified before anything is sent — that's by design, not an instant self-serve payment button.

What if I'm on a monthly payment plan?

Monthly installment payments are typically billed either directly by your carrier or by a separate premium finance company that financed the premium — not by Gleason Insurance Brokers. Contact them directly for a recurring payment, or call us if it's unclear which one applies to your policy.

What forms of payment does Gleason Insurance Brokers accept?

Call 844-978-7283 to confirm current accepted payment methods for a pay-in-full or deposit payment — this depends on the specific carrier and policy.

Does making a payment mean my coverage is bound or renewed?

No. Payment alone — submitted, processed, charged, or even received — does not bind, renew, reinstate, extend, or modify coverage. Coverage is effective only once confirmed in writing by Gleason Insurance Brokers and/or the applicable insurance carrier or authorized representative.

Is it safe to send my bank or credit card information by email?

No — never send banking or credit card information by email, even to a contact you know. When electronic payment is available, we'll provide a secure payment link through an approved processor. For wire transfers, always verify the instructions by phone using a number you already have, not one provided in the same email as the instructions.

What if I get an email saying the wire instructions changed?

Treat it with real suspicion. Email accounts can be compromised, and fraud attempts often arrive as a last-minute "updated" wire instruction. Call our office directly using a number you already have — not one in the email — before sending funds to any account you haven't independently verified.

Can my premium be paid directly to the insurance carrier instead of through Gleason Insurance Brokers?

Yes, for some carriers and transactions. When that applies, we'll provide or point you to the carrier's own payment instructions, and that payment is then subject to the carrier's own billing, cancellation, and refund terms rather than ours.

Will canceling my policy get me a full refund of my premium?

Not necessarily. Any return premium depends on the specific policy, carrier, and any premium finance agreement in place — minimum earned premium, audit premium, fees, taxes, and other charges can all reduce the amount actually returned.
