Inland Marine insurance policies are a type of property insurance that cover tools, equipment, materials, or property that move from place to place, especially away from a fixed business location. The name sounds confusing, but it has nothing to do with boats or water. 

Historically it came from insurance that protected goods transported over land instead of sea.

For contractors, inland marine insurance is most commonly used for tools and contractor equipment coverage.

Not usually covered from an inland marine insurance policy: 

• Wear and tear
• Mechanical breakdown
• Rust or corrosion
• Deterioration from age
• Poor maintenance 

Inland marine (often used by contractors for tools and equipment coverage) is designed to cover sudden and accidental losses, not normal deterioration from use. Other businesses inland marine can usually cover musical instruments, fine arts, camera equipment owned, leased, rented or controlled by the Insured and for which the Insured is liable. Perils Insured: all risk of direct physical loss or damage, except: wear and tear, hostile or warlike action, insurrection, rebellion. 

Example of a Covered loss:

• A contractor’s compressor is stolen from a jobsite.
   

Not covered:

• The compressor stops working after years of heavy use.
• Anything considered wear and tear
